About Our Candles

At the Raccoon River Candle Company, we use a combination of soy wax and bee's wax, with cotton and paper wicks. Our candles are at least 90% natural (some of our products contain scents, dyes, and/or UV inhibitors). Here are just some of the advantages of our candles over paraffin (the most commonly used candle wax):

  • Our candles burn cooler - making them safer to use in your home.
  • Our candles produce no harmful carcinogens.
  • Our candles produce 95% less soot - making them cleaner and healthier.
  • Our candles burn over 40% longer than equivilantly sized paraffin candles.
  • Our candles are bio-degradable and water-soluble - making them easier to clean up.

Burning Instructions

While we are sure that everyone knows how to use a candle, there are some things you can do to make your experience safer and more enjoyable.

  • Use your candles. As much as you may like to look at them, they are best when burned. We'll make more. We promise.
  • Keep your candle out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause your candle to sweat or discolor.
  • Burn candles long enough (at least an hour) to form a complete melt pool. This will ensure that the candle burns evenly and creates the best scent.
  • Candles should be burned for no longer than 4 hours at a time.
  • Discontinue burning when candles are within 1/2 inch from the bottom. This will keep the bottom of the candle from getting too hot and damaging items beneath it.
  • Always place candles on flat, heat-resistant surfaces and away from flammable surfaces.
  • Like everything else in the house, please keep your candles away from children.
  • Please! Please! Please! Never leave a burning candle unattended.

About Paraffin Wax

Paraffin is the most commonly used wax substance in the United States (due, primarily, to it's cost and ease of crafting). It is know to have several problems, including:

  • Is made from refined petroleum.
  • Contains eleven documented toxins. Two are carcinogenic.
  • Produces soot emissions that can ruin your walls, furniture, and even your health.
  • Produces fumes that are documented to cause kidney and bladder tumors in laboratory animals.
  • Is not bio-degradable or water soluble, making it hard to clean up.
  • Burns hotter and faster than soy or bee's wax candles, making it more dangerous to use in your home.
  • The American Lung Association has warned consumers of unhealthy indoor air quality as a result of burning paraffin candles!
